Position Title: Manager of Trade & Customs Operations

Reports to: Director of Corporate Customs and Trade

Location: Norwalk, CT

Job Summary:

Position reports to Director of Trade & Customs and will be based in Norwalk, CT. Corporate Trade & Custom’s mission is to provide structure and guidance to the Newell Brands Divisions and their Trade Departments. The Corporate Trade Department provides guidance and lead trade strategies across our businesses, ensuring the cost effective, compliant and seamless movement of cross border operations.

Working with the divisions, the Corporate Manager of Trade and Customs Operations, will create standard processes, procedures and programs on a global scale. They will develop and evolve the vision and core elements for our global customs compliance program. Success in this position will be largely predicated on the employee’s ability to stay “ahead of the curve” and lead a culture of proactive planning as opposed to reactive response.

Job Duties:

  • Develop, document, and deploy an operational trade framework, that will be followed by import and export managers at the divisional level

  • Design and develop an operational metrics package and scorecards along with a monitoring procedure that will compare performance across Newell’s operating units (and brokers) and enable benchmarking

  • Partner with transportation and logistics managers to ensure that strategic and operational metrics are in-line with best practices

  • Partner with sourcing and supplier managers to implement innovative solutions and track supplier performance

  • Work with divisions to globalize the classification program using Amber Road

  • Work to digitalize the entry process

  • Strengthen the global trade operations network

  • Manage the company's customs valuation policies to ensure declaration of proper value for customs purposes.

  • Manage all bonds, entity registrations, and power of attorneys

  • Pursue duty reduction opportunities by utilizing international trade agreements, tariff classifications, preferential duty programs and other duty saving initiatives.

  • Interface with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and governmental agencies, as needed, to comply with information and/or audit requirements.

  • Interface with worldwide subsidiaries and departments to communicate customs information, policies and procedures.


  • 7-10 years of relevant experience

  • Bachelors in business-related discipline

  • Corporate level accountability for managing Trade & Customs at a firm of at least $1B in revenue

  • Experience working with Foreign Trade Zones

  • Experience with Assist and Valuation program

  • Excellent project management and organizational skills

  • Industry certifications including a customs brokerage license are strongly desired

  • Experience in digitalizing the entry process through Global Trade Management software or other means.

  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, as well as demonstrated strong interpersonal skills able to communicate with all levels

  • Global Customs experience is preferred

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

  • Proficiency with SAP

  • Positive attitude, self-starter and ability to work in a team environment

  • Experience in a fast-paced environment working with multiple projects and priorities
