Position Title: Associate Industrial Designer

Location: Kalamazoo, MI

Reports To: Sr. Manager, Industrial Design

Summary: This person will conceptualize and develop new products that improve the lives of our customers. In this role you will be involved in all aspects of Industrial Design. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams under the guidance of the design team leadership to create customer experiences for the next generation of products.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute as directedagainst integration of technology and innovation platforms leveraging new andexisting VBL

  • Application of consumerinsights into innovative design solutions across a multitude of media

  • Ability to participatein programs that require direct contact with consumers through participation ofqualitative research including home visits, ethnographies and focus groups.

  • Work closely withEngineering to develop product specifications and validate prototypes.

  • Support conceptualize and development ofnew products having an average level of difficulty and complexity

  • Performs other dutiesas needed

  • Bachelor’s degree inIndustrial Design

  • A recent graduate orhave less than three years of relevant experience

  • Ability to travel atleast once per quarter

  • Demonstrate ability to work in teamenvironments

  • Ability to present inEnglish.

  • Design Fundamentals (Basic Awareness) Understands the principles ofdesign applications within industrial design and has developed undergraduatelevel projects to the highest degree through illustration, rendering andmodeling,

  • Industrial Design Research (Basic Awareness ) Understanding and experience ofethnographic research, principles of investigation, harvesting resources andinformation systems.

  • Surface Development (Basic Awareness) Able to articulate how surfaces responds to light and environment.

  • Study Models (Basic Awareness) Has developed undergraduate level project prototypes with theability to think and communicate design in dimensions.

  • Feasibility Engineering (Basic Awareness) Awareness of engineering processes. Mechanical, Process,Materials, Structural, etc.

  • Visual Communications (Basic Awareness) Demonstratesunderstanding of the specific media and mediums resident within the fields ofcommunication design and the fundamental design components of each.

  • Digital Design Tools (Basic Awareness) Capable of navigating Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchbook Pro, Rhino(or other CAD)

  • Materials and Methods (Basic Awareness) Knowledge of common materials and their manufacturing process withthe ability to select for design intent.

  • Solid Modeling (Basic Awareness) College level experience inbuilding appearance models in support of design projects.

  • Interface Design (Basic Awareness) Principles of human factorsas it relates to controls and functional surfaces.

  • Human Factors (Basic Awareness) Knowledge of Human Scale andbasic ergonomic principles.
