Position Title: Manager, Product Development

Reports to: Director, R&D

Location: Huntersville, NC

Job Summary:

The Manager, Product Development will be responsible for leading a team of engineers on new product development (NPD) and sustaining product engineering for a key product category. Moderate amount of travel may be required.

This position will:

• Provide technical oversight of design and development of new products via New Product Development Stage-Gate process

• Manage product engineers, project leaders, and contract engineers

• Require the ability to work effectively with other disciplines including Marketing, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain

Job Duties:

Project Execution

• Plans, estimates, staffs, organizes, and monitors significant projects

• Calculates products costs while driving to a cost target and identifies cost reduction opportunities

• Identifies current technology gaps and collaborates with vendors and outside agencies to develop enabling technologies or solutions to narrow the gap

• Leads ideation sessions and summarizing outputs

• Identifies opportunities to file for patents through patent research and thorough understanding of claims


• Understand how to use Six Sigma approaches, standard deviations, and process capability (Cpk)

• Basic understanding of metrology equipment used

• Ability to lead DFMEA and/or PFMEA and distinguish between program, safety, business, regulatory, and consumer satisfaction risk

• Ability to lead root cause analysis, lean process, and Kaizen activities

Product Performance

• Teaches / Authors technical specifications for the development and implementation of new products

• Teaches others how to create consumer relevant test methods to mitigate risk identified in DFMEA

• Develops partnerships with vendors and suppliers

• Ability to use design tools to create components and complex assemblies

• Applies best practices and processes as well as use of PLM technologies


• Working understanding of manufacturing equipment used on our products

• Assesses effectiveness of current product manufacturing technologies and applications

• Works with suppliers to ensure that items are delivered on time and quality

Materials • Ability to identify alternative materials for use in a given product

• Identifies procedures for manufacturing, packing, shipping, identifying, and transporting materials and finished products

• Recommends various tools and techniques for automating, simplifying, and enhancing material testing

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in an Engineering-related discipline required (Master’s degree preferred)

• 10-12 years of product development experience required

• 2 years management experience preferred

• Demonstrates ability to effectively lead people and mentor and develop employees

• Demonstrates proven project management skills including scoping, schedule management, and documentation

• Demonstrates experience working with global teams including working with Asian manufacturing suppliers

• Demonstrates experience with consumer research and translating the voice of the consumer to product solutions

• Demonstrates work experience in a team environment with good communication skills

• Demonstrates proven ability to handle the development of multiple projects (7+) simultaneously

• Demonstrates working knowledge of ProE, finite element analysis

• Demonstrates evidence of strong problem solving skills including identifying problems, potential problems, and developing solutions

• Demonstrates proven track record of creativity and innovation
