Position Title: Plant Metallurgist

Reports To: Industrial Manager

Work Location: Greenville, TN

Job Summary:

The Plant Metallurgist will be accountable for the application of metallurgical principles to the production practices, process and quality control system, product and process improvement programs, and laboratory functions. This role will also generate additional revenue streams through new alloy and product/process development initiatives.

Job Duties:

  • Works within the Quality System to assure the cost-effective production of high quality product .

  • Assists in the establishment of product/process specifications of material manufactured in the Primary/Industrial Departments. Analyzes customer complaints relative to metal processing to eliminate complaints.

  • Plans, implements, and oversees top priority opportunities/products in response to market analysis, especially focused on alloy development, covering research and development through the launch phase of the business cycle.

  • Ensures that the necessary equipment,materials, manpower, and outside services are inplace to allow successful and timely completion.

  • Evaluates results and reports data to Management on a regular basis.

  • Work with groups to determine existing process capabilities and identify areas of improvement that will position products more favorably in the market and improve margin %. This includes evaluating new processes or new equipment that will provide enhanced process capability where required to meet market demands.

  • Provides all needed metallurgical services and work using both internal and external resources to other departments and to customers

  • Develop and evaluate the engineering and manufacturing process to estimate production costs and methods to determine commercial viability of products.

  • Establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the Department, the Group, the Company, and the community.

  • Maintains the professional competence, knowledge and skill necessary for the satisfactory performance of all assignments .

  • Performs other duties as assigned by Management.


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science & Engineering.

  • Two to five years experience in a similar field, alloy development experience in a continuous strip casting environment preferred.

  • Experience with manufacturing operations such as casting, rolling, slitting, forming and/or stamping.

  • Experience in LEAN manufacturing and using statistical process control, DOE, and process capability index preferred.

  • Good written and oral communication skills with all levels of the organization.

  • Good interpersonal skills including the ability to lead by example, to function with a team, and to direct and influence others in a positive fashion.

  • Computer skills to include spreadsheets, word processing, internet searches, and presentation software.
